Postpartum Recovery: The First 6 Weeks
Your body's recovery process after childbirth, things to pay attention to, and tips for healthy recovery.
Postpartum Period
The first 6 weeks after birth is an important period when your body starts returning to its pre-pregnancy state. Taking good care of yourself during this process is critical.
Physical Recovery
If you had a vaginal delivery, the perineal area heals within 2-3 weeks. If you had a cesarean section, the incision site may take 4-6 weeks to heal. Avoid heavy lifting and make sure to rest.
Lochia Discharge
Vaginal discharge (lochia) for 4-6 weeks after birth is normal. It is red and heavy in the first days, gradually decreases, and its color changes.
Emotional Changes
You may experience emotional ups and downs due to hormonal changes. "Baby blues" is normal within the first 2 weeks. However, if it lasts longer than 2 weeks, it could be postpartum depression and you should seek professional support.
Nutrition and Rest
A diet rich in protein and iron speeds up your recovery. Try to sleep when the baby sleeps. Drinking enough water is very important, especially if you're breastfeeding.
Sexual Intercourse
The general recommendation is to wait 6 weeks. However, every woman is different. You can start when you feel ready and your doctor approves.
